Peau d'âme

Peau d’âme is a body of work that delves into materiality, identity, and culture through a process of deconstruction and transformation. By working with cellulose fibers derived from tissue paper, Nan engages in a profound reflection on the relationship between material, memory, and the quest for self.

Through the act of dissolving and reconstituting this fragile material—symbolic of intimacy and impermanence—the artist recreates a symbolic skin, an envelope bearing the layers of both personal and collective memory. Far from being mere destruction, this process becomes an act of regeneration, where each reformed fiber embodies a search for identity and culture, revealing the invisible threads that weave our shared humanity.

"The paper is dyed, soaked, manipulated, and torn, only to be eventually reassembled onto a new paper base. Inspired by prints from Asia, reconstructing an image through this process allows me to inscribe my emotions and imagined story.

This artistic exploration is a deeply introspective journey into the many facets of my identity, as well as the roots and potential branches that the multiplicity of Asian cultures—brushing against me since childhood—might have sparked within me."
